A routine maintenance was all it was "supposed" to be that day. The accelerator core, within the drive core though, had seen much better days. Sadly one could very rarely tell when it would go bad as it was like an olden days water heater, and looked good on the outside, but usually failed on the inside. It was extremely difficult to check it as well given how deep within the drive core it happened to be. One would have to vent the radiation, then go into the drive core in a radiation protective suit, depending on the remaining gamma levels. Harris knew this. Leto... well, Leto knew about accelerator cores, but sadly didn't know about their habit of going bad without anyone ever noticing it whenever they were doing regular maintenance on the drive core. Harris was in the middle of explaining it to him once their routine maintenance was done, when he had told the pilot they were ready to head out, and to restart the drive core.
Red lights suddenly started blaring in engineering, and Leto looked up surprised. Lieutenant Harris looked towards Leto and quickly ran over to one of the control panels. "Shut it down!" he yelled to one of the other soldiers on the engineering deck. Leto was still standing next to the drive core when the accelerator core blew. Shrapnel came flying through the containment wall, and radiation began to seep into the engineering deck. "Leto!" cried Harris as the shrapnel slammed into his face, cutting it up pretty good, and landing him flat on his back out of surprise. Harris ran over and pulled him away from the containment wall, where the radiation was seeping outwards. "We need a medic down here now, vent the radiation! Do it now, and close the secondary containment wall!" Harris called out to the other engineer down there.
The drive core hummed as it was shut down, and the ship came to a dead stop, forcing Harris and Leto up against the wall, as the inertia kept them moving. "Ow..." said Leto as he reached up to touch the scratches on his face which were bleeding pretty darn good, as the shrapnel had hit him deep in the right side of his face leaving a three inch long scratch from his ear to the side of his eye, luckily didn't hit his eye, as he had turned his head when the accelerator core had blown up. The secondary containment wall slid in place, locking in the escaped radiation, and the vents were turned on, sucking the radiation into space. "Where's that medic at?!" called out Harris, as he tore a piece of his uniform's sleeve off in order to wrap it around Leto's face as to try and stop the immense bleeding that was coming down the side of his head.
Dazed and confused by what had happened, Leto asked Harris, "What happened? What happened to the Drive Core?" Harris kept pressure on the side of Leto's face with his one hand, and he then said, "My initial guess was what we were just talking about, just happened, the accelerator core went bad and blew." Sighing, he turned when the medic finally arrived, and allowed the medic to start taking care of Leto and his injured face. Removing the torn sleeve, and looking at the wound, after wiping away some of the bleeding, the medic stated, "It's going to leave a nasty scar, but I doubt it's life threatening. The bone is still intact..." Harris sighed a sigh of relief. Taking out a regular bandage, and wrapping it around Leto's face once more, the medic would put a gauze pad under it so that it would help soak up the bleeding. "I'll have to stitch it up in the medical lab," he said. "Help me get him up there, won't you?" he asked, helping Leto to his feet, as the young man's body was still quivering pretty good from the explosion that had knocked him over, and he was still fairly dazed by it.
Harris told the other engineer to give a full report to the commander if she came down, and to figure out why the accelerator core when earlier than expected. Lifespan of that part was usually five to seven years, they had expected it to last at least seven, but it was only on it's sixth year of service. Harris inwardly was cursing himself that he hadn't fixed it at the four year mark, but after some discussion with the other crew members, they felt it would continue to work for the full seven years. It was nearing the time they had discussed to replace it anyways, just blew a bit earlier than expected. Harris on the other hand, assisted the medical officer to helping get Leto into the elevator, and up to the medical lab...
