Year 2186,
First month of the second epoch,
SSV Ravenwing,
Hyperspace outside Earth, Sol system, Local Cluster.
It wasn't a dreadnaught, but the ship was still massive. With a crew of a little over eight-hundred soldiers, officers, and staff, the SSV Ravenwing was an impressively sized heavy weight battle cruiser. It was a vessel that couldn't even land on planets with medium or heavy gravity. They had just taken a small shore leave on Earth, stopping off for supplies, fuel, and some down time. Given the last unexpected run-in they'd had with Cerberus which had left them short a few fighting hands, they had also made port to look through the up-and-coming recruits for replacements.
There were several promising figures, but only a few had been selected. Seven, to be exact. All of them were newly enlisted privates, fresh out of training but highly recommended by their training sergeants. All were different classes of varying levels, from engineering to infantry to medical. They'd had to take smaller shuttles into the atmosphere to dock on the cruiser. When they arrived, they were greeted by a master sergeant. He was not tall for a male, standing at roughly five and a half feet. He was lean and fit, with tan copper skin, bright green eyes and brown hair. He appeared to be in his early thirties, with slight creases at the corner of his eyes that hinted he was more likely to be smiling than frowning. His uniform also marked him as an E6 medic.
Returning the salutes when they were given, he gave the order to be at ease. "Welcome to the SSV Ravenwing, your new home for the next foreseeable future. I am Master Sergeant Daeron Shayathir. You may refer to me as sergeant or simply sir. Despite the stories you may have heard regarding this ship's reputation, we are not terribly big on formalities here. I'm sure you'll pick up on that quickly enough." There was a slight smile on his face. The Ravenwing was notorious because of its commanding colonel, a woman who was known for being loose with her opinion and was supposedly tougher than an Elcor's hide with a disposition as sunny as a varren's. Being invited to join the crew of the Ravenwing was usually met with mixed reactions. On the one hand, the colonel and her training staff were known for turning out hardened soldiers that rarely balked in the face of anything. On the other hand, that was typically because the colonel herself tended to be exceptionally hard on her people during training to the point where many hated her by the end of it. Taking a spot on the Ravenwing was not a pleasure cruise. However, to be offered the chance to work with an N7 colonel was also a compliment.
Daeron nodded his head to a few of the individuals behind him, an array of third through first class privates were gathered. All of them were dressed casually. "Each of you will be partnered with one of the men behind me. Their job is to show you to your bunks, and then to keep an eye on you over the next few weeks until you get used to our schedule and don't get lost on the ship. They'll show you where we post the schedule and how often we rotate it. If you have any questions... Edgar?"
A holographic ball of dark blue light appeared over a disc that was resting on a thin piece of paneling that jutted from the wall. At the very center of the ball was a tighter ball of light that was pure white in color. "Yes, sergeant?" The electronic voice was male, its tone a light baritone. As it spoke, the ball of white light in the center stretched out, streaking around inside its blue circumference with thin tendrils, reminiscent of an electric "crystal ball" back from the twenty-first century. Daeron smiled again, then addressed the new recruits once more. "Edgar is our V.I. on board, and he should be able to answer any questions you have regarding the ship, its crew, and our missions. Make yourselves at home."
Nodding to the privates both new and old, he turned on his heels and stepped out of the room before anyone even had a chance to salute him, leaving the men to figure one another out and get settled.
